A state-funded prekindergarten program offered through the Wayne County school system helps ensure that 4-year-olds have the chance to be ready for school. Classes are offered at the T.G. Ritch Pre-K Center in Jesup and at Screven and Odum elementary schools. Enrollment in this voluntary program is open to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. Excluding 4-year-olds who qualify for the federally funded Head Start program, the current number of classes offers places for almost all of the 4-year-olds in the county.

Parents of children 3-5 may apply for enrollment in Head Start but must meet certain income criteria. Slots exist for 120 children; beyond that number, children are placed on a waiting list. Wayne County Head Start is located at 724 N. Fourth St. in Jesup.

Other preschool opportunities are offered by two local church programs. First School at Jesup First Baptist Church and School of Discovery at Jesup First United Methodist Church and by some local day care programs. Country Kids Learning Center offers the only state-funded prekindergarten program at a day care center in Wayne County.
